Recently disclosed police reports have provided new insights into an incident that occurred on New Year's Day in downtown Fargo. Around 2 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call regarding a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near Broadway Square. Initial witness statements indicated that the driver was speeding, while video evidence showed the driver had a green light. The pedestrian sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg. Further investigation revealed discrepancies between witness accounts and surveillance footage, leading to the identification and arrest of the driver, Audrey Berg.
The newly released documents highlight conflicting narratives surrounding the event. Witnesses claimed the driver was traveling at excessive speed, while video footage indicated the pedestrian ran into the side of the vehicle. All witnesses and the pedestrian appeared to be under the influence, complicating the accuracy of their testimonies. Surveillance cameras initially identified the vehicle as a Dodge Charger, but further review determined it to be a dark grey Ford Focus owned by Audrey Berg.
Detailed examination of the events shows that the pedestrian was running across the road when she collided with the side of the vehicle. Despite having a green light, the driver did not stop to assist the injured individual. Police noted that both the pedestrian and witnesses exhibited signs of intoxication, which influenced their perceptions and statements. This discrepancy between what was seen and what was reported has added layers of complexity to the case.
Audrey Berg, identified as the owner of the Ford Focus, was interviewed at her residence following the incident. She admitted to consuming alcohol before driving and stated that the pedestrian "came out of nowhere." Berg reportedly panicked and failed to stop or provide aid to the injured pedestrian. As a result, she faces charges related to failing to fulfill her legal obligations during an accident involving serious personal injury.
Berg is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing and/or arraignment on February 19. Her statement to the police indicates confusion and fear at the moment of the accident, admitting she "freaked out" and did not know why she did not stop. The case underscores the importance of responsible behavior, especially when under the influence, and highlights the potential consequences of failing to act appropriately in emergency situations.
